What Is the Japan Rail Pass?
The JR Pass gives unlimited travel on JR trains nationwide, including most Shinkansen (bullet trains). Available in 7, 14, and 21-day options for foreign tourists.
2026 Prices
- 7 days: ¥50,000 (Ordinary) / ¥70,000 (Green/First Class)
- 14 days: ¥80,000 / ¥110,000
- 21 days: ¥100,000 / ¥140,000
Is It Worth It?
Calculate your routes first. Key Shinkansen fares for reference:
- Tokyo → Kyoto: ¥13,320 one way
- Tokyo → Osaka: ¥13,870 one way
- Tokyo → Hiroshima: ¥18,380 one way
- Kyoto → Hiroshima: ¥11,420 one way
Worth it if: Tokyo → Kyoto → Hiroshima → Osaka + local JR trains. Not worth it if: Just Tokyo → Kyoto round trip (¥26,640 < ¥50,000).
